Thrifting is pretty in right now. Not only is it more sustainable than buying fast fashion clothes, but you can find some really unique stuff that no one else is wearing. If you have sewing skills, you can take those thrift finds to the next level, creating incredibly custom and personal fashion items.

That's exactly what a Reddit user called /chairono does for herself. She's very proud of the way she tailors thrifted clothes to fit her perfectly. So, when she wore a custom dress to her boyfriend's work holiday party, she was eager to talk about how she had altered it. Later, her boyfriend got mad, saying she made him look bad. Now, she's asking AITA if she was acting inappropriately.

OP Takes Pride In What She Does

OP doesn't like fast fashion because it's not sustainable, and the clothes don't always fit you how they should. Instead, she thrifts clothing and alters them to fit her well. She does this for all of her clothes, including a holiday dress she altered for her boyfriend's work party.

OP was incredibly proud of the dress she made. When other coworkers and their partners began asking where she got the dress, she explained that she altered it herself from a thrifted bridesmaid's dress. The people she was talking to seemed pretty impressed, and she began discussing how most of her outfits cost under $10 or $20.

When they left the party, OP's boyfriend began berating her for making him look bad. Apparently, her thrifting habits don't line up with his image, and he felt that she should've lied and said her dress was designer. Now, OP is wondering if she said the wrong things at the party.

Most women would agree that talking about getting a dress on sale, making one yourself, or thrifting one is a perfectly normal conversation piece. There's a lot of pride in getting a good deal, which is something the boyfriend probably doesn't understand.

Many Women Don't Really Care About Designer Clothes

That's not to say none do, but most commenters agreed that women love showing off how inexpensive their nice clothes really are. You can own nice things without spending a lot of money on them, after all.

It Would've Been Worse If OP Had Lied

Users are glad OP didn't lie.

As OP and commenters point out, it could've been easy for her to be caught in a lie about designer clothes. Her honesty was enough to make a good first impression.

The comment section also believed that OP's boyfriend needs to get his priorities straight.
