Most couples in a relationship share a lot of things with one another including their personal belongings and properties. However, the situation where one partner puts unequal effort into the relationship and expects more is something that causes rifts in relationships. A Reddit user took to the platform to find out if she was wrong not to have shared ownership of her car with her boyfriend.

Issues Began After She Purchased A New Car

At the time the Redditor began dating her boyfriend, she was using a car she had bought while she was in college. Her boyfriend, however, had no car nor did he have a driver's license. For a year after they began dating, the girlfriend encouraged him to get his driver's license, offering to teach him with her car. As a way of support, she bought him the book he needed to pass the exam but her boyfriend neglected to read it.

Tired of paying for frequent repairs on the car, she decided to trade it for a newer car, a 2016 Juke. Only a year after she got the new car did her boyfriend agree to take the driving test for his G1 license which allows him to practice his driving skills under the supervision of a licensed driver.

A year later, the girlfriend got a new job earning a lot more money than she had been making. In addition to making more money, she had also saved up some years' worth of tax returns which she used to make a down payment for a car she had always wanted to own. The boyfriend, however, is quite the spendthrift, often leaving his girlfriend to take care of their bills alone. They had planned to purchase him a car with a $15,000 loan he was approved for, but he squandered the loan.

Out of frustration at her boyfriend's irresponsibility, the Redditor drove to a dealer and traded the Juke for a Wrangler, making her the sole owner of the vehicle. This infuriated her boyfriend who claimed that the Juke was the car he was to learn to drive in and she was supposed to keep making payments on the car so he could also have a car of his own.

Out of anger, she prevented him from driving the Wrangler because he is neglectful on the road and she did not want him to damage her car's steel front and rear bumpers or worse kill someone. She, however, did borrow a friend's Accent for him to learn and get his G2.

The Reddit user felt there was a need to protect and reward her financial responsibility, she feels bad for not including her boyfriend in the purchase or allowing him to use it. Other Reddit users, however, are in support of her actions, adding that her boyfriend was entitled and untrustworthy. Some even advised her to end the relationship.
