Weddings should be happy occasions. Even if some of your loved ones aren't around anymore, they're probably still watching down on your wedding with pride. Of course, some of the members of your new family aren't going to be the best people. They might try to overstep their boundaries.

A man on Reddit who goes by Full_Pineapple990 discussed how his new fiancée's family made some pretty rude comments about his deceased parents. When he pointed out the fact that they were dead, the family got mad at him for making everyone uncomfortable. Naturally, he decided to ask the AITA sub if he truly was in the wrong.

OP and his fiancée, Jessie, met in college, and slowly built a romance over time. Now that they are engaged, they had an engagement party with her side of the family. OP's parents died when he was a child and ended up in foster care at the age of 12.

At the party, some of Jessie's relatives began making comments on OP's name (Bowie), insisting that his parents shouldn't have named him something so childish. OP responded in kind by saying he'd have to go to his parents' graves since they both died years ago. Everyone was uncomfortable and began telling OP that he was making things awkward. OP, on the other hand, acted like nothing had happened, which just made the family more uncomfortable.

Jessie told her family that they were being rude, despite the family feeling otherwise.

The family was making OP upset by saying unkind things about his parents. All he did was inform them that his parents were dead. Commenters applauded the way OP handled the situation.

Users pointed out how they had a problem with OP's name, meanwhile the fiancée is named Jessie, which is short for Jessica. OP responded that Jessie's family still calls her Jessica, completely ignoring the fact that she prefers Jessie and even changed her name years ago.

Commenters Also Appreciated That OP Did Not Get Worked Up.

He very well could've gotten angry and yelled at the family. Instead, he made a snide comment and went on like nothing happened. Commenters felt that he might want to establish boundaries with his future in-laws before the wedding.
