People usually advise that your doctor isn't part of your family because of the many ethical rules behind it. An example of this issue was recently shared on Reddit by a woman whose doctor crossed an unspoken line and lost her trust.

OP described that for the last couple of years, her doctor had been a longtime friend of her sister's. Initially, she used to go to another doctor, but since the pandemic, she has stuck with her as her physician, and until now, she hasn't had any problems with her.

She explained that a couple of years ago, she was diagnosed with ADHD and has used prescription medications since then; however, she never shared this with her family because they would see her as lazy.

Yet, she found out her sister was aware of her ADHD in a horrible way. OP said they were in the family home watching Matthew Perry's story when she commented about his weight changes, and her sister responded, "well it started with prescription drugs so I hope you don't get hooked!"

OP was left speechless after her sister's comment and later found out her doctor, also known as her sister's best friend, had told her about her prescription during a recent trip where she got drunk.

What About The Consequences

OP was highly upset about her doctor revealing her prescription, especially to her sister, and is now worried she will tell the rest of her family. She is thinking about reporting the doctor because it was a massive violation of the HIPAA regulations that protect the patient's privacy; however, her sister is trying to change her mind.

While her sister keeps telling her she will make her lose her job and ruin her life, she only feels guilty about how this can affect her doctor's children, who she cares about. She also added they'd known each other their whole lives and that she is practically part of her family, which explains why she feels so betrayed.

Many Redditors agreed with OP; she should report her. Some people wrote that it was improbable she would get fired over one complaint but that it would teach her a lesson. They said it is unforgivable, and being drunk is no excuse.

Everyone said OP should get another doctor and she should watch her back for her sister, as she is as guilty as her doctor because she intended to throw her under the bus in front of their family. They pointed out that she shouldn't have said anything if she was so concerned about her friend's career.
