Wedding guest lists are crucial for every couple because they determine who'll be in the room when making one of their most important commitments. Allowing the right people into that private space means you'll protect your energy.

Unfortunately, those right people aren't always family despite the norm of inviting them because of their relationship.

Restricting immediate and extended family members from a wedding is an age-old practice. It's become more common recently thanks to the enlightenment of a new generation willing to speak up for themselves.

This Reddit user invited her parent to her wedding but was taken aback when they asked for a plus one.

The Intricacies Of A Throuple

The Reddit user is a 27-year-old woman who's getting married next Spring but doesn't want her middle-aged biological parents to come with their throuple partner. According to her, she was raised by her grandparents after the couple abandoned her as a child.

They recently reconnected during the wedding planning a the request of her grandpa, and she discovered they were in a throuple; a three-person consensual romantic relationship. While she's not judging their choices, the Redditor believes they want to upstage her wedding.

They planned to introduce the man, a 30-year-old, to the rest of the family at the wedding and the Redditor wasn't having it. There's tension in the family because the biological parents struggle to connect with their daughter.

She also warned them that the security would embarrass their guest if they defied her directives. The parents felt insulted and thought she was doing it spitefully, but she insisted it was to preserve the wedding's decorum.

The Parents Should Be Honest

Reddit users comforted the poster and told her it wasn't her fault that things didn't pan out well. They pointed out the parent's ulterior motive in bringing their third wheel, as they could've done that long before the ceremony.

That way, all awkwardness would be gone before March, and the daughter would feel comfortable enough to allow the third party into her wedding.

Unfortunately, they're planning a grand reveal on her wedding day and it's been a recipe for disaster. The mother's argument about the woman exposing her private affair was invalid because her plan to bring the third member of her polyamorous relationship to the ceremony meant doing that.

If they have good intentions, the best solution would be to meet a few months before the wedding to hash things out and find a common ground while respecting their daughter's boundaries.
