The horror genre as a whole gets a bad rap. People often pigeonhole horror movies as being uninspired, relying on cheap thrills and gimmicky special effects in order to elicit a predictable emotional response.

However, true horror buffs understand that this couldn't be further from the truth, and that when it's executed correctly — horror movies can become true works of art. To get a better idea of what I'm referring to, have a look below and check out these facts showing why horror movie costumes go above and beyond.

The costumes for 'The Blair Witch Project' were incredibly no frills.

When your total film budget is just $60,000, you need get creative when it comes to things like wardrobe. In order to save on costs, the cast simply wore their own street clothes to the shoot.

The costumes for the cast of 'Scream' were inspired by a very famous painting.

Costume designer Cynthia Bergstrom said that she drew inspiration from Edward Munch's "The Scream." Which if you're familiar with the painting, seems incredibly apt for the film.

Color is indicative in Jordan Peele's 'Get Out'.

When the main character, Chris, wears blue, it's meant to symbolize his authentic self. In scenes where we see him in his "cozy" pajamas, they'regrey — which symbolizes a state between black and white. In fact, most of the characters in the movie are either wearing black or white.

Without giving too much away, the Amish family does a lof things that are very, well. not Amish. For instance, Amish people very rarely wear vests, except for church ceremonies. They also seldom wear cotton, due to the fact that it's harder to wash and maintain.

The production team spent time partnering with the science department of New South Wales University in order to see how a real life "invisibility suit" like Adrian's would actually work in real life.

The costume designs in 'The Witch' were incredibly accurate to the period.

According to costume designer Linda Muir, she used 35 different reference books in order to ensure accuracy. She also looked at countless photographs and visited a handful of museums as well.

Hannibal Lecter's mask in 'The Silence Of The Lambs' was supposed to be painted.

"The thought had been for the mask to have a finish on it, but when we received the sample, it was raw fiberglass, which looked like an old piece of dried-up leather — or even skin," costume designer Colleen Atwood explained to The Hollywood Reporter. "And it was so great, so it never went back for its paint job."

Leatherface's mask in 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' has some real-world inspiration.

The character of Leatherface, as well as his gruesome mask, was inspired by real-life serial killer, Ed Gein. Among other things, Gein was known for skinning his victims and making household items, such as lamps, from their flesh.

The red ropes used in 'Suspiria (2018)' have a kinky backstory.

"I researched different types of bondage ropes and came across the red rope, which we bought meters and meters of from sex shops," costume designer Giulia Piersanti told Elle.

Jordan Peele asked Steven Spielberg's permission for Evan Alex to be able to wear a 'Jaws' t-shirt in 'Us'.

Peele has stated on multiple occasions how much Spielberg has influenced his work. Getting the iconic director's permission was one of the first things Peele did after finishing the script.

According to costume designer Andrea Flesch, the intricately embroided outfits were handspun from a role of century old fabric. Flesch said that this added to the element of reclusivity.

Chris Rock refused to look good for 'Spiral: From The Book Of Saw'.

The legendary comedian wanted to look the part for his role as an overworked/underpaid detective, so he opted for a cheap looking suit that was right off the rack.

Bill Skarsgård had to show up to his callback audition for 'IT' in his own clown makeup.

"I bought my clown makeup at one of those Halloween stores, put it on, and then went to the studio, which is right by Hollywood Boulevard," he explained to GQ. "It’s street parking, so I parked my car, and then I had to walk in clown face to the appointment."
